CANTON, N.Y.— The Union College baseball team scored nine runs on 11 hits in 9-2 win against St. Lawrence in game one of a Liberty League doubleheader Saturday at Tom Fay Field. The Saints responded with a 6-0 win in game two to secure the split.
The Dutchmen go to 15-9 overall and 10-4 in the Liberty League, while the Saints move to 10-18 overall and 8-10 in the conference.
In game one,
Jake Fishman went the distance on the mound for the Dutchmen, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts to improve to 4-0.
Jake Vesling led the Union offense, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while
Kent Curran was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Union struck quickly, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Fishman helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Vesling.
In the top of the third,
Kent Curran drilled a leadoff double to right center and scored on a
Wiley Knight two-out single to center field. After Zach Twitchell and Vesling kept the inning alive with a walk and a single,
Harrison Glatt delivered an RBI single for the 3-0 lead.
Union added three runs in the top of the sixth and seventh, putting the game out of reach. Vesling hit an RBI single in each inning,
Eric Egan drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth and brought in two runs with a single in the seventh and Curran contributed his second RBI of the day with a two-out single.
The Saints tallied two consolation runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Adam Reichel scored on an error and Kyle MacDonald hit an RBI single to left field.
Frank Grady took the loss on the mound for the Saints, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
In game two, St. Lawrence freshman pitcher Emmett Dunn  finished with a two-hit shutout in a complete-game win, striking out five with six walks. Dunn held the Dutchmen hitless until the top of the ninth. Â
Anthoyn Butler led the Saints at the plate, going 3-for-3 with his first career home run and three runs scored. Michael LeFevre also homered for the, driving in the game-winning runs with a two-run shot in the first inning.
After LeFevre homered to left center for a 2-0 Saints lead in the first, Butler hit a solo shot to left field in the second to push the lead to 3-0.
St. Lawrence added two more runs in the fourth inning on a Beau Yaremko RBI single and an error. The Saints sixth and final run of the afternoon came in the bottom of the eighth when Sullivan hit a RBI double to the base of the wall in left .
After allowing a single to center by Curran to lead off the ninth and another single to right with one out in the frame, Dunn and the Saints turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game, sealing the win and the split.
Union closes out its four-game series with St. Lawrence with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 24. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m
