St. Lawrence sweeps baseball

CANTON, N.Y.— St. Lawrence used a two-run ninth to secure a 5-4 come-from-behind win and a doubleheader sweep over the Union College baseball team Sunday at Tom Fay Field.

The Dutchmen are now 15-11 overall and 10-6 in the Liberty League, while the Saints go to 12-18 overall and 10-10 in the Liberty League.

In game one, the Saints got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but Devin Coffey cut the Union deficit in half with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.

After two scoreless frames, St. Lawrence erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth, including an RBI single by Evan Reichel and a two-run single from Devin Robson. Michael LeFevre extended the Saints lead with a two-run single in the top of the sixth and Mic Regan scored on a groundout later in the inning to make it 10-1.

Joe Ganim had a sacrifice fly and Anthony Amoroso drove in a run with a single to cap the scoring for the game.

Dan Hedden registered the win on the mound, allowing three earned runs on two hits with seven walks and six strikeouts over  5 2/3 innings.

Nick Williams took the loss for Union, surrendering five runs (one earned) on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, the Dutchmen struck quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Kent Curran drove in Coffey and Jake Fishman with a triple before scoring on an Eric Egan sacrifice fly.

Union starting pitcher Jake Vesling managed to keep St. Lawrence off the board until a three-run sixth tied the game at 3-3.

The Dutchmen loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but they could only manage one run, as Ganim plated Coffey with an RBI groundout. Reichel got out of the jam with a strikeout in Union's next at-bat.

St. Lawrence took advantage of a walk and an error in the top of the ninth to put to runners in scoring position.  Union's second error of the inning allowed Robson to score, tying the game at 4-4, and Tom Sullivan drove in Anthony Butler with a fielder's choice in the Saints next at-bat.

Liam Rogers retired the Dutchmen in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 5-4 win. Rogers picked up the win on the mound, tossing 1 2/3 innings of no-hit relief.

Curran finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Fishman went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Union.

The Dutchmen host Oneonta at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 26 at Shuttleworth Park.
