GENEVA, NY—The William Smith College lacrosse team handed No. 19 Union its first Liberty League loss, topping the Dutchwomen 11-9 on Boswell Field Saturday. Heading into the final weekend of regular season play, the Herons (7-7, 6-1) sit in first place in the Liberty League standings following today's win over the Dutchwomen (9-4, 6-1) and Clarkson's loss to Skidmore.
This was Union's first regular season league loss since a 14-9 loss at William Smith on April 26, 2014. Union had won 15 straight in league regular season play.
Hannah Connolly scored three goals and added an assist for four points for the Herons. Alexandra Bird (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) notched a team-high five points on four goals and an assist. Ella Calder had a career-high day with four points on a goal and three assists. Allie Flaherty scored a goal and shared a game-high with three draws and two caused turnovers. Sarah Honan made seven saves and picked up a game-high three ground balls.
Maggie Comiskey posted a game and season high eight points for Union on three goals and five assists. Jackie Hagopian produced three goals and Cailin Pandolfi added two scores. Paige Smith caused two turnovers. Jen Hughes finished the game with seven saves for the Dutchwomen.
Just 2:32 into the game, Hagopian connected off a feed from Comiskey. The Herons answered with the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead. Bird started the run 3:33 into the game. Twenty seconds later, Melissa Moore found the back of the net. Ali Burns, Connolly and Bird rounded out the scoring with all unassisted tallies. With 10:10 left in the half, Hagopian struck again for the Dutchwomen off a pass from Comiskey. With 7:50 on the clock, Connolly scored as Ella Calder set up the play. Union closed out the first half with two goals from Pandolfi and Hagopian's third of the day to get within one at 6-5 at the break.
William Smith opened the second half with four straight goals to build a 10-5 lead. Ella Calder fed Flaherty with 21:37 on the clock. Bird logged an unassisted tally a little under a minute later. Ella Calder dished out another assist to Connolly with 11:46 remaining, and Bird notched her fourth goal of the day at 10:07. Back-to-back goals from Comiskey got Union within three. With 3:35 remaining, Calder sent home a shot after a pass from Bird. Union posted the final two goals of the game. Comiskey completed her hat trick with1:21 remaining, and Kellie Cronin scored with 16 seconds left in the game for the final.
William Smith held a 24-18 advantage in shots and a 16-13 edge in draws. Union won 13 draws, while the Herons came away with nine. William Smith was successful on 9-of-14 clear attempts, while the Dutchwomen were successful on 7-of-14 tries.
Union closes out the regular season with Liberty League home games Friday vs. Vassar at 4 p.m. and Saturday vs. Bard for Senior Day at 3 p.m.
