Softball loses two at RPI

TROY, NY - Stephanie Caudle and Victoria Hepworth each threw complete game shutouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Union College, on Sunday at Doris Robison Field.  With wins of 3-0 and 3-0 in nine innings, the Engineers improve to 25-7 overall (8-2 Liberty League), while the Dutchwomen drop to 7-19 (2-8 Liberty League).

Caudle surrendered just five singles in seven innings. She struck out nine and walked just one. Dani Hennel allowed nine hits and all three runs were unearned, while she struck out three.

The Engineers scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Morggan Kollmeier reached on an error to lead off the frame, before Daven Puhl got about on a bunt single. Caudle and Morgan Ten Eyck followed with RBI-singles and a throwing error plated the third run. Courtney Casey had two hits for the Dutchwomen.

In Game 2, Hepworth tossed a nine inning shutout. She gave up six singles while striking out seven without a walk. Dana Dolinko allowed nine hits.

Courtney McArthur provided all the runs in the bottom of the ninth, launching a towering three-run homer to left to break the deadlock. Caudle was five for seven with a run and a run batted in. McArthur went two for three with a run and three RBI. Casey, Hennel and Nikki Ditizio had two hits each for the Dutchwomen.

Union travels to Ithaca on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
