Baseball edges New Paltz

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.— The Union College baseball team battled to a 4-3 non-conference win against New Paltz Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

The Dutchmen improve to 16-11, while the Hawks go to 20-13-2.

First-year centerfielder Joe Ganim led the Union offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kent Curran finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored and Jake Fishman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Union opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on back-to-back singles by Curran and Ganim before tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the third. Fishman plated Devin Coffey with a two-out double to left-center and later scored when Eric Egan was caught in a rundown.

New Paltz finally broke through in the fifth, battling back to tie the game.  Danny Campbell led off the inning with a double and scored on a Ryan Frost single two-out single. Jake Williams drove in Frost two batters later, legging out an infield single.  Nick DePietro capped the scoring for the inning, stealing home on a pickoff attempt at first base.

The Dutchmen pulled in front in the bottom of the sixth, scoring what proved to be the game-winning run when Ganim brought home Fishman with a two-out single up the middle.

Tim Curtis, Matt Yonta, Bill Christopher and Jamie Faber combined for four shutout innings, allowing just one hit over the final four frames. Curtis picked up his second win of the season, while Faber posted his first save. Dutchmen starter Anthony DeSantis went five innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Brett Wisener took the loss on the mound for New Paltz, allowing one earned run on three hits over one inning.

Union hosts Clarkson in a pivotal four-game Liberty League series April 30-May 1. First pitch for Saturday, April 30 is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
