Baseball splits doubleheader with Clarkson

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—A three-run fifth inning lifted the Union College baseball team to a 7-4 win in game one and a split of its Liberty League doubleheader against Clarkson Saturday at Shuttleworth Park. The Golden Knights took game two 17-5.

Jake Fishman improved to 5-0 on the mound, allowing four runs (0 earned) on six hits with one walk while striking out five. Anthony Amoroso led the Dutchmen's (17-12, 11-7 Liberty League) offense going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored.

Chris Miller finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Greg Jasek was 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Golden Knights (17-14, 12-6 Liberty League).

Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Miller single and a Brad Pearson sacrifice fly, but Union fought back with four runs in the third.

Fishman and Kent Curran drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, and after Eric Egan singled to load the bases, Harrison Glatt got the Dutchmen on the board with a fielder's choice. Curran scored on a double steal in the next at-bat to tie the game and Amoroso cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right center.

The Golden Knights tied the game at 4-4 when Miller delivered a two-out two-run single up the middle, but again Union responded, regaining the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Amoroso scampered home on a wild pitch, scoring what would prove to be the game-winning run. Curran doubled the lead with an RBI single and Fishman scored on a wild pitch for the game's final run.

Ryan Riley took the loss on the mound for Clarkson, allowing three earned runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts over two innings.

In game two, Clarkson erupted for 17 runs on 22 hits. Miller led the charge for the Golden Knights , going 3-for-5 with two run scored and five RBIs, while Jasek finished 4-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Golden Knights opened 5-0 lead with four runs in the second before putting the game out of reach with a six-run third, capped by a Miller grand slam.

Ted Wilson posted his third win on the mound, tossing 8 2/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on 14 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Fishman was 3-fo-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, Egan went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Matt Ferdenzi had a pair of RBIs.

Union and Clarkson square off in another doubleheader on Sunday, May 1. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
