Dutchmen Clinch Berth in Liberty League Tournament with Victory over Vassar

SCHENECTADY, NY—The Union College men's lacrosse team defeated Vassar College 17-13 to clinch a berth in the Liberty League tournament on Senior Day.

Vassar came out swinging and scored two early goals to go up 2-0 after one minute of play. Union came back with vengeance as Andrew Blau and Thomas Stanton recorded back-to-back goals. The Brewers scored an additional two goals to go up 4-2, but the two of the Dutchmen seniors (Paul Alberti and Nolan Stauffer) each scored a goal to tie the game. Vassar recorded a late goal, but Union's Blau tied the game up at 5 and Daniel Kycia found the back of the net with three seconds left in the first to put the Dutchmen up 6-5.

The Brewers started the second quarter with three consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead. Union's Peter Richardson brought the gap back to within one. Vassar posted one additional goal, before Blau and Kycia each put a biscuit in a basket to tie the game at 9-9 going into the half.

After the half, Cam Slatton put the Dutchmen up 10-9 off an assist from Richardson. Vassar scored their lone goal in the third with 9:16 remaining in the period. Stauffer, Kycia and Richardson each recorded goals to close out the period.

The Dutchmen led 13-10 going into the fourth quarter. Union's John Edmonds and Nick Wright each scored early goals to put them up 15-10. Vassar scored a single goal with 7:53 left in the fourth. Kyle Mason found the back of the net to put the Dutch up 16-11. Stanton scored his second goal of the game to put Union up 17-12. The Brewers posted a goal with 1:27 left in the game.

Kycia and Blau each recorded a hat trick in the game, while Richardson recorded six points (two goals, four assists). Stanton recorded six groundballs, while Tom Lawton went 23-33 from the faceoff x with 10 groundballs. Sam Bebout recorded the victory with five saves.

The Dutchmen will take on the top-seeded RIT in Rochester on May 6 at 4 p.m.
