Field hockey wins in OT, 4-3

SCHENECTADY, NY -- First year Charlotte Leyland scored 2:46 into overtime to lift the Union College field hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Wheaton College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchwomen improved to 2-1 while Wheaton is 2-2.

Leyland stole the ball off a stoppage 10 yards out to the right of the net, and her shot deflected off a Lyons' defender into the back of the net.

Union had a 27-18 shot advantage and 10-5 advantage in corners. Riley Thompson made 12 saves for the Dutchwomen while Laura Aptowitz made nine saves.

The game was scoreless in the first half, but the Dutchwomen came out strong in the second stanza and led 3-0 after 60:45. Angelina Stewart scored from Leyland at 39:38. Stephanie Resnick made it 2-0 at 57:55 with an assist from Alexa Puleio. Stewart notched her second at 60:45 close in on the left side with an assist from Brooke Cleveland.

Just 1:17 after Stewart's second score, the Lyons got on the board. Michelle Connolly scored an unassisted goal and at 62:39, Kelsey Buckley's fifth of the year made it 3-2 with an assist from Hannah Southard. The Lyons completed the comeback at 65:36 on Holly Norberg's tying goal on a penalty stroke.

The Dutchwomen return home September 13 to host New Paltz at 6:00 PM.
