SCHENECTADY, NY –Junior
Katie Monahan 2:26 into the first half and that's all the Union College women's soccer team would need, as it held on for a 1-0 win against the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at College Park.
Dutchwomen (1-3-0) sophomore goalkeeper
Kelsey Hartsoe turned away all six shots she faced, earning her first win and her first career shutout in her first start of the season.
Union pulled in front quickly when Monahan headed home a
Nicole Sturno corner for her first goal of the season. Â
The Dutchwomen nearly doubled their lead 12 minutes later, but Yellowjackets (0-2-2) goalkeeper Madilynn Lee turned away Sturno's direct attempt at goal from a corner kick.
Rochester outshot Union 6-1 in the second half, but Hartsoe confidently turned away the three shots on goal to secure the clean sheet.
The Yellowjackets finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots, while Union held a 4-2 edge in corners.
The Dutchwomen return to the pitch at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, hosting New Paltz.
