ROCHESTER, NY—An own goal at 2:09 into the first half proved to be the difference, as the Union College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against Montclair State in its season-opening game, Friday afternoon in the Flower City Classic hosted by Rochester University.

Sophomore Erica Matteo finished with six saves in goal for the Dutchwomen, while Red Hawks goalkeeper Alyson Burns turned away all four shots she faced to register the shutout.

The Red Hawks jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the second minute when Montclair midfielder Ryelle Sansone's cross into the six-yard box caromed into the next off a Union defender.  

The Dutchwomen threatened late in the second half,  but Burns denied attempts from Allie Supranowicz and Morgan Dominick to preserve the shutout.

Union returns to the field at 11 am Saturday, Sept. 3 against Geneseo.
