SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's hockey team opened up the season with an exhibition game against Concordia University (QE).
The Dutchwomen held the Stingers scoreless through the first period and into the second period before Keriann Schofield ended the deadlock with a shot from the left wing beating Céline Tessier over her shoulder. Concordia would go on to score four more times coming out of Messa Rink with a 5-1 win.
Union's penalty kill was tough to crack in the first period as the Dutchwomen killed off all four of their penalties. Five of Tessier's eight saves in the first period came on the power play. The Dutchwomen put plenty of pressure on Stinger's goaltender Briar Bache with five shots on net.
The pressure on Bache continued throughout the rest of the game as Union finished with 20 shots on goal. The breakthrough came for the Dutch with just two minutes remaining in the game as Alli Devins won the faceoff and the moved the puck down the ice finding
Jordi Naidrich who fired a shot on net. Bache stopped the first sot and the rebound shot from Devins but, couldn't stop the third chance. Naidrich flipped a backhand into the top of the net to put the Dutchwomen on the board.
Haley Shugart and Devins were credited with assists on the goal.
Union hit the ice again next weekend as it hosts University of Connecticut on Friday and Saturday. The Dutch tied the Huskies 2-2 in last year's matchup in Storrs, CT.
