SCHENECTADY, NY—Senior forward
Michelle Staples scored with 6:36 remaining to lift the Union College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Liberty League win against Bard, Saturday afternoon at College Park.
The Dutchwomen, who extend their unbeaten streak to five, improve to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Raptors go to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Union pulled out to a 1-0 lead 9:18 into the game when first-year
Morgan Dominick converted on a feed from
Aly Leahy for her first career tally.
Avalon Qian provided the response for the Raptors just over 12 minutes later, collecting a pass from Ciara Gallagher before netting her third of the season.
The Dutchwomen controlled the majority of play in the first half, outshooting the Raptors 17-10, but Chloe Ramos managed to turn away six shots on goal to keep the game even at 1-1 at the break.
The second half proved to be more of the same with Union placing six strikes on goal over the first 38:24 of the frame until Staples produced the winner on Leahy's second assists of the day.
Union sophomore goalkeeper
Kelsey Hartsoe made two saves, while Ramos and Kelsey O'Brien finished with six saves apiece for Bard. The Dutchwomen outshot the Raptors 27-4, including a 10-1 margin in the second half, and held a 9-2 advantage in corners.
Union goes on the road to take on Westfield State at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28.
