SCHENECTADY, NY—Chrissy Penney scored 7:53 into the second overtime frame to give FDU-Florham a 2-1 win against the Union College field hockey team, Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.
The Dutchwomen go to 1-1, while the Devils move to 2-0 on the season.
Union senior goalkeeper
Laura Aptowitz finished with a career-high 19 saves, including seven in overtime. Sophomore
Hannah Christian netted the team's lone goal.
The Dutchwomen pulled in front early when Christian converted on her own rebound at 17:54 after being sprung on a breakaway by a long hit.
Despite registering six four shots on goal and 11 penalty corners, the Devils could not find a way past Aptowitz, who best stop of the half was a sprawling save on a close range shot from Kim Davis with just under three minutes to play.
The Devils continued to press in the second half and they were rewarded at 8:14, as Davis netted her own rebound after a pair of Aptowitz saves.
FLU-Florham nearly found the go-ahead goal with just over four minutes remaining, but Aptowitz denied Penney on a 2-on-0 to send the game to overtime.
The Devils had the best scoring chance of the first overtime frame, but a defensive save from
Alexa Steriti with five seconds remaining pushed the game to a second overtime stanza.
Penney tallied the winner 7:53 into the second overtime period, tipping home a pass from Maggie Sohns to give the Devils the 2-1 win.
