PLATTSBURGH, NY—Madeline Soccacio scored 4:47 into the second overtime period to give SUNY Plattsburgh a 2-1 win against the Union College women's soccer team, Tuesday night at Plattsburgh's Field House Complex.
The Dutchwomen go to 0-3, while the Cardinals move to 2-0.
After 42 minutes of scoreless play to open the contest, Sarah Haight put Plattsburgh in front just before the half, smashing a long-range effort into the top left corner.Â
The Cardinals nearly doubled their advantage in the 55
th minute when Cammey Keyser's strike rang off the crossbar.
The Dutchwomen bounced back quickly, forcing Plattsburgh goalkeeper Nichole Gibson into a pair of saves before sophomore midfielder
Nicole Sturno netted the equalizer in the 74th minute. Junior midfielder
Allie Supranowicz had her initial attempt stopped by Gibson, but Sturno was there to clean up the rebound, tying the game at 1-1.
Both teams struggled to generate offense in the first overtime, and Plattsburgh made the most of its lone opportunity in the second overtime stanza. Anissa Hartman broke down the right wing and cut into the 18-yard box before placing a shot on goal. Â Dutchwomen goalkeeper
Erica Matteo parried away the strike, but the rebound fell to Saccocio, who tucked a one-timer into the empty net.
Matteo finished with three saves, while Gibson stopped seven shots, including four in the second half. Union outshot Plattsburgh 14-13 and had a 4-3 edge in corners.
The Dutchwomen hosts Rochester at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 in their home opener.
