TROY, NY - First year forward
Haley Shugart netted a late goal in the third period to cut the Union College women's hockey deficit in half.
When RPI tried to clear the puck out of the zone, junior forward
Katie Laughlin poked at it sending it into the air. The puck found the stick of Shugart who picked out a corner and snipped it over the stick side shoulder of Engineer goalie Lovisa Salander.
The tally was the only Dutchwoman goal of the game as they fell to rival RPI 2-1 at Houston Field House Saturday afternoon.
Much like the day Friday night at Messa Rink, the game remained scoreless through two periods as both goaltenders shut the door on the opposition.
Kate Spooner made 18 saves through the first 40 minutes while finishing the night with 26 stops.
2:40 into the third period of play Union tried to clear the puck out of its own zone but, it fell to the stick of Makenna Thomas in the slot. She fired a quick wrister to break the scoreless tie.
The Engineers added to their lead at the 13:58 mark when Laura Horwood scored from her knees picking out the top corner.
With the assist for the Dutchwomen, Laughlin extended her point streak to three games which is the longest of the season for a Union player. Shugart now leads the teams in goals with six on the season.
Union is back in action next weekend as it plays host to St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Puck drop for Friday's game against St. Lawrence is set for 6:00 p.m. while Saturday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
