POTSDAM, NY – Four Clarkson University Women's Basketball starters combined to score all but two of the Golden Knights' points, and the hosts defeated Union College on Friday night, helping the Green and Gold claim a 66-58 Liberty League decision at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 10-8 overall and the team edged over .500 in league play at 5-4. Union fell to 8-8 and 4-4.
While Union was perfect from beyond the arc in the first quarter (4-for-4), Clarkson would end the half as Molly Stewart made a layup in the final 10 seconds to give Clarkson a 28-27 advantage at the break. Stephanie Grobe made four of her first five shots from the floor and finished with 10 points in the half, while Madison Shea chipped in nine points and four assists. For Union,
Jenni Barra buried four 3-pointers for 12 points, and Sophia Borg came off the bench to contribute six points for the Dutchwomen.
Union briefly regained the lead on two occasions in the third quarter and tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, but the Dutchwomen couldn't contain Clarkson as they did a few weeks ago in Schenectady. With the score tied 48-48 midway through the fourth, Stephanie Grobe converted a jumper and Devin Sorell buried a 3-pointer to give the Knights a small five-point advantage. Though Union would again trim the deficit, freshman Molly Stewart made the 3-pointer to give the Knights an eight-point lead. From there, Clarkson made enough of its free throws down the stretch to win by the same margin.
Sorell finished with a game-high 20 points and Grobe closed with 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Stewart added 13 points and six boards and Shea finished with 14 points, seven assists and four steals. For Union, Barra ended up with a season high 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting with five 3-pointers.
Sophie Borg also closed with 13 points and eight boards and
Erin Lyons tied her career high with five assists.
