Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Erickson Nets Fifth of the Season in Loss to No. 3/3 Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, NY - With the clock winding down in the third period, coach Josh Sciba elected to pull the goaltender in favor of an extra attacker.

With the added forward on the ice, first year Rachel de Perio slipped in behind the Clarkson University defense. A backhanded centering pass took a deflection off of first year forward Jordi Naidrich's stick before finding senior Emily Erickson in the slot. Erickson took the puck and slotted it in the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

This was the Dutchwomen's only tally of the game as they fell to No. 3/3 Golden Knights 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.

Union College women's hockey first year goalie Kate Spooner would make a career-high 45 saves in the losing effort. This is the third time this season that Spooner has made 40 plus saves in a game the last which came against RPI on Jan. 20.

For most of the first two periods, the game was scoreless that was until the 19:27 mark of the second when Clarkson's Cayley Mercer followed up her initial shot and found the back of the net.

In the third period, the Golden Knights would score two more both coming on the powerplay as Ella Shelton notched one at the 8:58 mark and Marcer scored her second of the game at the 13:03 mark to open their lead up to 3-0.

This was the Do It for Daron Game which helps raise awareness for youth mental health. Funds raised from the game will stay in the local area to help youth mental health.

Union is back on the ice next weekend as it travels west to face ECAC foes Cornell and Colgate on Friday and Saturday.
