Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Dutchwomen Fall to No. 7/7 Cornell in Ithaca, NY

ITHACA, NY - Sophomore defenseman Arianna Kosakowski spotted the Dutchwomen an early 1-0 lead at the 3:44 mark of the first period when she backhanded a shot in the slot past the Big Red goalie Laura Voorheis.

The powerplay goal is the second tally of the season for Kosakowski as junior Caitlyn McLaren and first year Cheyenne Harris picked up the assists.

Coming into the game, the Union College women's hockey team was 4-1 when scoring the first goal of the game. That would not hold up as the Dutchwomen fell to No. 7/7 Cornell University 5-1 at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, NY Friday night.

Cornell was quick to respond as Hanna Bunton to Union's opening goal tying it up at the 7:41 mark of the period off a rebound from a Kaitlyn Doering shot.

A few minutes later, the Big Red had a penalty shot opportunity but, the chance was stuffed with the right pad by Dutchwomen goalie Kate Spooner who made 32 saves in the losing effort.

Cornell would take the lead for good when Doering slipped one past Spooner at the 15:36 mark of the first period to giving the Big Red a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Celine Tessier would replace Spooner in net in the third period finishing with 10 saves for the game.

This weekend the ECAC is partnering with the Headway Foundation to raise awareness for concussions in athletics. Teams will be wearing special stickers on their helmets while raising money for the cause.
