SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College field hockey team fell in a well fought battle to William Smith this evening, 4-2.
Both offenses got going quickly in the first few minutes of the game, as William Smith would strike less than two minutes into the game. Returning Liberty League Player of the Year, Hannah Wood, showed off her prowess when she received the ball right off of a corner and shot a laser beam straight to the back of the net.
With a quick 1-0 deficit, the Dutchwomen were swift to respond.
Charlotte Leyland would net her fourth goal of the season, when she helped knocked the ball in after it ricocheted off several Heron defenders. In the 32
nd minute, William Smith's Kelsey Pierce scored to help the Herons lead 2-1 heading into the halftime break.
William Smith came out of the break recharged and continued to produce offensively. Off a corner, Wood shot the ball. The shot would evidently go air-born and Fallon Adair was in the right place at the right time. In an effort to avoid the air born ball, it hit off of Adair's stick and shot across the net and into the back.
Less than four minutes later, Dutchwoman
Katherine Talacci would help the ball find its way in as she made her way through a cluttered battle at the front of the net. Talacci's goal brought the Dutchwomen within one of William Smith as the Herons would lead 3-2 with roughly 25 minutes to go.
With three minutes to go, William Smith used the give and go to maneuver in front of the net and get one past Union's goalkeeper. Wood would score the sixth goal of the night and ultimately solidify the Herons' victory over the Dutch.
Union field hockey returns to action this Sunday at 4 p.m. at the University of Rochester.
