SCHENECTADY, NY – Behind goals from senior
Katie Monahan and sophomore
Linsey Giles, the Union College women's soccer team earned its first Liberty League win of the season, defeating Bard College, 2-0, on Wednesday night at College Park Field.
Â
Despite coming through with two late goals, the Dutchwomen nearly found themselves down in the early part of the contest. In the 15th minute, Bard's Giuliana Scanni took a shot that bounced off the crossbar of the Union goal.
Â
It was also not the only chance the Raptor's had to open the scoring, as Susan Andreas had her own shot hit off the crossbar in the 75th minute.
Â
Besides the two close calls for Bard, it was all Union in the contest. The Dutchwomen out-shot the Raptors, 14-10, with shots on goal also going to Union, 6-3.
Â
Union's first goal came off the foot of Monahan in the 77th minute. It was Monahan's third goal of the season, and she received an assist from
Amanda Ashmen on the play, who tallied her third collegiate point on the goal.
Â
The Dutchwomen then capped off the victory with an insurance goal in the 88th minute.
Linsey Giles received a through-ball from
Sydney Keane. Giles then fired a strong shot on net into the upper corner for her team-best fifth goal of the season.
Â
First year goal keeper
Allison Sorkenn earned her second career win and second career shutout, making two saves. On the other end of the field, Bard keeper Tessa Greenhalgh made four saves in the losing effort.
Â
Union College returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21, hosting Clarkson at 3 p.m. (ET).
