Dutchwomen win in thrilling overtime fashion

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College field hockey team defeated Vassar College this afternoon, 1-0, after a thrilling double overtime match up.

At the end of regulation, the two teams were stuck at 0-0. Union had out shot Vassar nine to six and the Dutchwomen had eight corner opportunities that they were unable to capitalize on.

The Brewers threatened to score with just under seven minutes to go in regulation. With both teams cluttered around Union's net, Vassar managed to get several shots off. However, Goalkeeper Heather Poission had other plans, as she had a few brilliant saves that ended up being key for the Dutchwomen down the stretch,

Vassar controlled the majority of the first overtime period's momentum. They had nine shots in comparison to just five from Union. The Brewers also had five corner opportunities in the first overtime period, alone, but Union's defense managed to hold off the Vassar pursuit.

Union's game winner would come less than four minutes into the second overtime period. With the Dutch's first corner opportunity since regulation, they were ultimately able to capitalize. The Union corner was immediately sent out to Hannah Christian at the top of the key. Christian passed the ball off to one of Union's leading scorers, Katherine Talacci. On the run, Talacci was able to make a powerful stroke to drive past Vassar's defense and ultimately make its way to Bretta Beer, who knocked it past Vassar's keeper and helped open the flood gates for Union's victory celebration. The goal was Beer's first of the season.

At the end of the game, Union had out shot Vassar just 16-15.

The Dutchwomen return to play this Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. against Morrisville State College.
