Union tops St. Lawrence 30-6

SCHENECTADY, NY – Union College returned to the friendly confines of Frank Bailey Field after three weeks on the road and earned their fifth-straight win, a 30-6 victory over league foe St Lawrence. The win improves the Dutchmen's overall record to 5-1 and 1-0 in the Liberty League.

The opening minutes of the game saw plenty of offense with both teams trading scores in the first 5 minutes of the game.

The Saints' first drive saw them possess the ball for only 1:51, but they were able to move it 87 yards on seven plays for their lone score of the day. Sparked by a 47 yard kickoff return by Griffin Beal, the Dutchmen drove 46 yards in five plays, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by Nick Cascione. The extra point by Jonathan Schaible allowed the Dutchmen to take the lead for good with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter.

The game's biggest play was turned in by senior running back and captain Connor Kinzelmann when he took a handoff on the left side, behind great blocking from the offensive line, and raced 47 yards to the corner of the end zone for the touchdown and 14-6 lead.

Union never looked back and the Dutchmen used a balanced offensive attack to add three field goals by Schaible and a defensive score by Jack Reilly. Senior captain Alex Kaplanovich led all receivers with 11 catches.

The other story of the day was the Union defense. After yielding points on the Saints' opening drive, the Dutchmen defense shut down the St Lawrence attack for the remaining 57 minutes. After the first drive, they held the Saints to just 95 yards for the remainder of the afternoon.  They also had four sacks and caused five turnovers on the day, including an interception by Tucker Newman, and recovered four fumbles. A Saints fumble early in the third quarter was scooped up by Jack Reilly and returned 30 yards for a touchdown.

Union will travel to Rochester on Saturday, Oct. 14, for a 1 p.m. (ET) game against the Yellowjackets at Fauver Stadium.
