Skidmore comes back for 51-46 win at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior guard Kelly Donnelly pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 18 points to lead Skidmore College to a comeback 51-46 comeback victory over Union College in a Liberty League women's basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds are now 11-3 in the league and 15-8 overall. The Dutchwomen stand 8-6 in league play and 12-10 for the season.

Union by as many as 12 and by 11 (39-28) with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Skidmore outscored Union, 23-9 in the fourth period.

Veronica Moceri scored 17 with five steals and Ari Fustini added six rebounds and four assists for the winners. Skidmore shot 55% in that fourth quarter and shooting 20% in the third period, and held Union to 13% shooting in the fourth period. The Thoroughbreds, who shot 31% for the day, outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 51-39.

Sophie Borg led the Dutchwomen with 14 points and Erin Lyons added seven points with six boards. Natalie Leone also had six rebounds. Union forced 17 turnovers, 14 in the first three quarters. The Dutchwomen shot 27% for the game.

Union took an 18-11 lead after the first quarter, and a Leone three pointer with 3:28 left in the first half gave the Dutchwomen a 12 point advantage at 29-17. It was 29-21 Union at halftime, when Skidmore was shooting 27% at that time.

Union led by 12 twice more in the third period, including 35-23 with 4:47 left, and took a nine point lead (37-28) into the fourth period. After Jenni Barra made it 39-28 with 10:00 to play, Skidmore went on a 10-0 run capped by a jumper by Donnelly for a 39-38 game with 6:28 to play. Union got up by four with 3:15 left at 44-40, but Skidmore took its first lead since early in the game at 58 seconds on Moceri's first three throw. With Union up 46-45 with 33 to play, Donnelly and Moceri made a combined six free throws over the final seconds to seal the win.

Union returns to action Friday at RIT.
