PRINCETON, NJ – Despite a second period powerplay goal by first year forward Katelynn Russ, The Union College women's hockey team fell in Princeton, NJ to the No. 9/9 ranked Princeton Tigers Friday night.
The Tigers were paced by two first period goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Dutchwomen at Hobey Baker Rink.
Russ' goal came in the second period of play with the Dutchwomen trailing 3-0. The Princeton defender tried to clear the puck but, Russ intercepted it right in the slot. She made a deke in front of goalie Alysia da Silva before putting it home unassisted at the 11:52 mark of the second period to make it 3-1.
Princeton broke the scoreless deadlock when it turned the puck over in the neutral zone. Karly Lund picked up the puck got out on a two-on-one break with Carly Bullock. Lund found Bullock right in front of goal on the rush. She deked around Union goalie Amelia Murray to make it 1-0 at 15:26 of the first period.
Lund and Julia Edgar were credited with assists on the goal.
Princeton would make it 2-0 before the first intermission as Edgar found a streaking Lund right at the blue line. Lund split the defenders and went backhand to forehand giving the Tigers a two goal advantage.
Edgar and Sylvie Wallin were given assists on the goal scored at the 19:08 mark of the first period.
Princeton tacked on its third of the game at the 5:00 mark of the second period as Molly Contini scored off assists from Molly Strabley and Kimiko Marinacci. Contini would score her second in the third period at the 14:22 mark off assists from Koelzer and Thompson.
The 2016-17 regular season concludes for Dutchwomen tomorrow afternoon when they travel to No. 10/10 Quinnipiac. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, CT.
