Vecchione's OT goal extends Dutchmen's win streak to four

Union one win away from fourth Cleary Cup

HAMILTON, N.Y.—Senior forward Mike Vecchione scored 3:21 into overtime to lift the No. 7/8 Union College men's hockey team to a 4-3 win against Colgate in a back-and-forth game, Friday night at the Class of 1965 Arena. The Dutchmen, who notched their first regular season win at Colgate since Feb. 25, 2012, improve to 23-8-2 overall and 16-4-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Raiders go to 8-17-6 overall and 6-12-3 in league play.

League-leading Union can clinch its fourth Cleary Cup as the ECAC Hockey regular season champion with a win in its final game at No. 9/9 Cornell on Saturday (7 p.m.).

Vecchione also registered an assist, extending his point streak to seven games (6G-6A). Sebastian Vidmar pushed his point streak to six games (3G-6A) with a goal, Ryan Walker produced his fourth point in as many games (2G-2A) with a goal and Luc Brown rounded out the scoring for Union. In goal, Alex Sakellaropoulos made 20 saves to improve to 20-4-1.

Walker's fifth of the year put opened the scoring at 13:41 of the first. Walker grabbed a feed from Ryan Scarfo in the right circle and drove to the net before lifting a shot over the glove of Colgate goaltender Colton Point (31 saves). Nick DeSimone recorded his third point in as many games (1G-2A) with an assist on the goal.

Colgate tied it a 1-1 2:18 later when Anthony Sanniti's wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic for his first of the season.

The Dutchmen pulled in front at 10:10 of the second period on Brown's sixth career goal. Spencer Foo sent a cross-ice pass to Brown, who tucked a shot just under the crossbar from bottom of the left circle. The assist was Foo's 34th of the season, tying a program single-season record (Kelly Zajac '12).

Again the Raiders battled back, scoring two goals in a 2:47 span in the third period to take a 3-2 lead.

Tim Harrison converted on a breakaway at 5:20 to tie the game at 2-2, and John Snodgrass put Colgate ahead at 7:47, pouncing on a loose puck in front of the net and flipping a backhand past Sakellaropoulos high on the glove side.

Union would not go away quietly, tying the game at 15:47 when Vidmar buried a one-timer from the low slot on a nifty pass from Supinski. Supinski now has six points in the last five games (2G-4A).

Vecchione completed the comeback in the extra frame, netting his 25th of the season and his Division I-leading sixth game-winning goal. After forcing a turnover in the Colgate zone, Vecchione snapped home a low shot, sealing the 4-3 win.

The Dutchmen were held scoreless on the power play for the first time in four games, finishing 0-for-4. The Raiders were 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
