WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Union College Dutchwomen (1-2) opened today's game with two goals in the first 1:05 this afternoon on Farley-Lamb Field, but the Williams Ephs (3-1) proceeded to score seven of the eight remaining goals of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into intermission.
The Ephs also outscored Union in the second half by a 9-6 margin to claim a 16-9 victory and extend their winning streak to three.
After
Mallory Toolan scored off a feed from
Jackie Hagopian and
Natalie Sullivan netted a free position goal Union was on top 2-0 just 65 seconds into the game. It took Williams almost seven minutes to get on the scoreboard. The Ephs answered the Union pair of goals with three straight goals. Jenna Chodos got Williams on the board at 23:12 when she scored on a free position with Ephs in a man-up situation.
An unassisted goal by Suzanna Penikis at 21:12 tied the game at two and 16 seconds later Katie Gallop gave the Ephs a brief 3-2 lead on an unassisted tally.
At exactly 16:00 of the first half Union's
Cailin Pandolfi tied the contest at three when she scored unassisted.
The Ephs took the lead for good just a minute and 45 seconds later when Emma Tenbarge (the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week) scored off a pass from Suzanna Penikis and the Ephs were up 4-3. That goal sparked the Eph attack to notch three additional unanswered goals; two by Kara Wollmers and another from Tenbarge.
Union collected 13 ground balls in the first half to the Ephs' 10. Union had 10 turnovers to the Ephs' 8. Eph goalie Margaret Draper recorded eight saves in the half, while Union goalie
Jen Hughes turned aside nine Eph attempts.
In the second half Union twice cut the Eph lead to three thanks to the efforts of
Jackie Hagopian who scored on both sides of an Eph goal by Katie Pattison. Pattison collected a draw control loose ball just over midfield and raced in on goal to score unassisted.
An unassisted goal by the Ephs' Kallie Saudek at 24:39 gave Williams a four-goal lead and Union was unable to get any closer the remainder of the way.
Jackie Hagopian led the Union attack with four goals and an assist, while the Ephs' leading goal scorer was Jenna Chodos also with four. Katie Gallop added two goals and two assists for Williams.
On the day Eph goalie Margaret Draper stopped 13 of 22 Union shots while a trio of Union goalies stopped 14 of 30 Eph shots.
Both teams collected 18 ground balls in the contest. Union committed 16 turnovers to the Ephs' 11. The Dutchwomen won 15 of the 27 draw controls.
Next up for Union is a road contest at Babson College on Thursday that will begin at 5:00 p.m.
The Ephs will also play on the road on Thursday as they travel to Brunswick, Maine where they will take on Bowdoin in a NESCAC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
