Baseball loses on walk-off to No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater

Auburndale, FL—Ryan Makusi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, giving fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater a 7-6 walk-off win against the Union College baseball team, Wednesday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla.

The Dutchmen go to 2-3, while the Warhawks move to 9-1.

Anthony Amoroso led the Union offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Zack Twitchell also had a multiple hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Tim Curtis pitched seven and one-third innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Bill Christopher suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits over the final one and one-one third innings.

Wisconsin-Whitewater jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a Matt Wary solo home run and a pair of RBI singles. Wary added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0, but Union responded with five unanswered runs to pull in front, 5-4.

Sean Cullen started the charge with a two-out double in the fifth, later scoring on an Amoroso single. Amoroso advanced to second on the play at the plate, and Twitchell knocked him home with a single in the next at bat.

The Dutchmen cut their deficit to 4-3 in the sixth when Kent Curran played Andy Labeck with a double before taking a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a pair of throwing errors.

The Warhawks regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, including Wary's third RBI of the game, but Sam Kirschenbaum delivered an RBI single in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 6-6.

Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the bottom half the inning with back-to-back singles.  Jordan Kuczynski reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Makuski was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, bringing home the winning run.

Wary finished 4-for-5 with three RBI. Mike Nompleggi picked up the win, allowing one earned run on two hits in the final inning. Westin Wuethrich tossed six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out five and walking one.

Union is back in action tomorrow, taking on Washington and Jefferson at 2 p.m.
