Softball wraps up Florida schedule

CLERMONT, FL -- The Union College softball team wrapped up the 10 game spring break week in Florida with contests against Calvin and Colby. The Dutchwomen lost to Calvin, 5-1 in the morning and closed out the break week schedule with a 2-0 loss to Colby.

In the opener, Kara Brown had two of Union's three hits in the 5-1 loss to the Knights. Dana Dolinko had the other hit for Union. Dolinko gave up four hits and four earned runs while striking out three in the complete game. Four different Calvin players had one hit each, Maddie DeGrot, Jessica Brasser, Anna Gernant and Casey Lawler. DeGroot scored two runs. Gernant won her sixth game in seven decisions, with the complete game three-hitter while walking one and striking out 13 batters.

The second contest was a pitchers' duel, as Colby's Julia Saul pitched a complete game one hitter. But Union's Kara Brown (the starter) and Dolinko alternated innings and combined to allow just five hits. The lone runs from the Mules came in the third with a Grace Farnko RBI single and a Robin Spoffo RBI single in the fifth inning. Kelly Hartsoe had Union's lone hit, a pinch hit. Saul; did not walk a batter and struck out three. Brown gave up two earned runs and four hits in three innings and Dolinko allowed just one hit in her three innings of work. Katie McLaughlin led the Mules with two hits and scored both runs.

Union will return home and will have three straight dates scheduled at Alexander Field. The Dutchwomen (2-8) will host Utica on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 PM.
