St. Lawrence sweeps Dutchwomen softball

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Madison Mitchell and Allie Courtwright pitched complete game victories to lead St. Lawrence University to a Liberty League sweep of Union College in softball action at Alexander Field Saturday. The Saints won the opener, 8-2 in eight innings, and posted a 13-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap.

St. Lawrence is now 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Dutchwomen, who played their home openers, fell to 2-10 and 0-2 in the Liberty League.

In the opener, Mitchell and Union's Dana Dolinko were in a pitchers' dual as the game was tied at 1-1 entering the seventh. A Caitlin Syphurs RBI double in the top of the seventh gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. But Union tied it in the bottom of the seventh as a fly ball off the bat of Courtney Casey dropped in between the third baseman and the shortstop, scoring pinch runner Rebecca Kaufman from second with two outs. In the top of the eighth, the Saints scored six times on three hits, including a grand slam home run by Syphurs.

Syphurs wound up the opener with three hits and five RBIs while Taylor Armijo had two hits. Mtichell improved to 8-0 and gave up seven hits and two earned runs in eight innings while striking out five. Casey had two hits for Union and Dolinko had allowed just two earned runs and seven hits with five strikeouts entering the eighth inning.

In the nightcap, Courtwright pitched four shutout innings and struck out two. The Saints scored five in the first and scored eight runs on seven hits while sending 12 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth. Armijo had two hits and two RBIs while Angelina Carney was four for four with three runs driven in. Union starter Kara Brown gave up five earned in the first two innings, and she had two of Union's five hits.

Union is back home Tuesday for a non-league doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta at 3:30 p.m.
