Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Scheufele Nets Game Winner in Overtime to Beat Babson

SCHENECTADY, NY - Union College fans were treated to a thriller in the first home game for the men's lacrosse game in 2017. With the game tied in overtime, sophomore John Edmonds had the ball behind the net. He came from behind the cage and found an open Jack Scheufele streaking towards the crease. Scheufele got off a quick shot to beat the Babson goalie to give the Dutchmen a 13-12 victory.

After falling behind 2-0 early on, Union would score seven of the next eight goals to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Six different Dutchmen found the scoresheet during the run as senior Peter Richardson was the only Union player to net multiple goals netting the first and the sixth goals.

The Dutchmen would take an 8-5 lead into the halftime break. Union had much of the possession throughout the first half dominating faceoffs winning 11-of-15 in the first 30 minutes of play.

That trend would continue into the second half as for the game Union would win 21-of-29 faceoffs. Senior Tom Lawton won 7-of-11 while sophomore Alex Newhouse won 14-of-18 faceoffs.

For much of the second half, Union held the lead. Behind a four-goal performance from Niall Dillon, the Beavers chipped back into the game. With 3:56 remaining in regulation, Dillon bright Babson all the way back tying the game at 12-12.

Union had a few chances with less than a minute to go but, they were unable to score sending the game into over. Before the Scheufele game winner, goalie Sam Bebout made his 17th save of the game moving to his left and knocking it away with the handle of his stick. That would be the only save of the overtime period as Scheufele scored two minutes into the overtime period.

The Dutchmen are back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Williams College. The March 8th game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. in Williamstown, MA.
