WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - With less than five minutes remaining in the game, the ball got worked around to
Jack Sullivan on the left wing of the attacking zone. Sullivan put a move on dipping his shoulder around his defender. He then found an open path to the goal as Sullivan beat the Williams College keeper right in front of the crease.
This gave the Union College men's lacrosse team a 9-8 lead with 4:37 remaining in the third game of the 2017 season. This would be the Dutchmen's only lead of the game as they suffered their first loss of the season to the Ephs 10-9 in Williamstown, MA Wednesday night.
With 49.1 seconds remaining in regulation and Union down a goal, coach
Paul Wehrum called for a timeout to set up a potential game tying goal. Williams negated the first attempt sending the ball the length of the field in attempt to run out the rest of the clock.
The ball was intercepted by senior Lance Lonergan Jr. with 10 seconds on the clock. He sent a long pass down Sullivan. Sullivan drove towards the net but, was swarmed by three Williams defenders and was stripped of the ball right before getting off a last second shot attempt.
After Sullivan's goal with 4:37 left on the clock, the Ephs Brandon Williams tied at 9-9 the game less than a minute. The eventual game winner came from William's Kevin Stump who capped off his hat trick at the 3:13 mark of the fourth quarter.
Union goalkeeper, junior
Sam Bebout, stopped a career-high 20 of the 30 shots that he faced in the game.
The Dutchmen will be back on the field on Saturday when they return home to face Springfield College. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
