Oneonta sweeps softball squad

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Starting pitchers Sabrina DeAngelis and Amanda Graziano combined for nine shutout innings to lead SUNY Oneonta to a softball sweep over Union College at Alexander Field Tuesday. The Red Dragons won the opener 5-3, and took the nightcap 6-2 (in five innings due to darkness). Oneonta improved to 16-6 on the season while the Dutchwomen fell to 2-12 overall.

DeAngelis allowed just one hit and walked two while striking out four to improve to 6-2 on the season. Selena Ruiz and Dana DelGenio each had two hits and Marlene Cuevas drove in two runs with a single to highlight a four run sixth inning that opened up a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons had eight hits in the opener and the sixth also featured an RBI triple by Brooke Corbett and an infield RBI groundout by Kate Jencarelli, who also drove in the lone run in the second on a two out double.

Union starter Dana Dolinko gave up four earned runs and seven hits in six innings while striking out four and not allowing a walk. Union scored three in the bottom of the seventh to rally. After a two run double by Kim Puzo made it 5-2, Laura Aptowitz had an infield ground out to score Puzo for a 5-3 game with two outs. But after a walk, reliever Kate Wood got the final batter to fly out to end it.

In the second game, the Red Dragons led 1-0 after four but added five runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two run homer by Jencarelli. The Red Dragons sent nine batters to the plate in that frame, which featured six hits. Union scored two in the fifth with RBI singles by pinch hitter Samantha Collins and Dolinko. DelGenio and Jencarelli had two RBIs each in the eight hit attack. Graziano gave up one in three innings and struck out one, and now stands 6-3 for the year. Union had four hits overall.

The Dutchwomen host SUNY Canton Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for another non-league doubleheader.
