SCHENECTADY, NY -- Backed by pitching in the circle, the Union College softball team swept SUNY-Canton in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Alexander Field in Schenectady, NY.
In game one, the Dutchwomen blanked the Kangaroos 8-0 as the game finished via run rule in the fifth inning. The second game ended in similar fashion as Union picked up a 14-3 win with the game ending after five innings.
The Dutchwomen were led in game one by a dominant pitching performance by
Dana Dolinko. Dolinko did not surrender a hit until final frame when Valerie Clark broke up the no hit bid.
Dolinko was backed by plenty of runs with the big burst from the Dutchwomen coming in the bottom of the forth plating four runs to extend their lead to 8-0. Each of Union's first four batters produced recorded at least one run scored and an RBI a piece.
In game two, the Dutchwomen slugged their way to a 14-3 win. They plated 10 runs in the third inning while almost batting around the order twice. Both
Nikki Ditizio and
Kim Puzo scored twice for Union in the inning. Carly Voellm had career highs of three hits and three RBIs and
Kara Brown also had three hits and drove in three runs while
Laura Aptowitz,
Brianna Godlewski and
Courtney Casey had two hits each in the 16 hit team performance. Aptowitz also drove in two runs.
Dolinko and Brown combined to give up just three runs on six hits. Dolinko picked up her second win of the day improving to a mark of 3-7 on the 2017 campaign.
Union will be back on the diamond on Saturday when it plays host to Clarkson University for a doubleheader in Liberty League play. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
