Baseball Tops Elms for Seventh Straight Win

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—Junior pitcher Nick Williams threw four shutout innings and first-year outfielder Matt Catalfo produced a pair of RBI to lead the Union College baseball team to a 6-2 win against Elms, Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

The Dutchmen, who have won nine of their last 10, improve to 11-6, while the Blazers go to 6-13.

Williams allowed just two hits over four innings, while striking out five and walking two. Jordan Whaley improved to 2-0, tossing two hitless innings.

Catalfo led the offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Jake Vesling was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Dutchmen broke a scoreless tie in the third when Catalfo delivered an RBI single and later scored on  Anthony Amoroso's sacrifice fly.

The Blazers threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but Williams forced a groundout to first base and struck out the next batter to preserve the shutout.

Andy Labeck hit a leadoff home run in bottom half of the inning, and Catalfo picked up his second RBI of the day with an infield single. Vesling produced Union's third run of the inning, plating Catalfo with a two-out single through the left side to make it 5-0. Sam Kirschenbaum extended lead to 6-0 in the sixth with a two-out, bases-loaded single.

Elms finally broke through in the top of the seventh when Jordan Zima drove in Aedin Wadja with an RBI groundout. Zima added his second RBI with a fielder's choice in the top of the ninth for the 6-2 final.

Cody Fisher took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings.

The Dutchmen return to Liberty League play this weekend with a home-and-home series against Vassar. Union travels to Poughkeepsie Friday, April 14, before hosting the Brewers Saturday, April 15 (1 p.m.).
