POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--The league-leading Union College baseball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Vassar on Friday afternoon, as the Brewers knocked off the Dutchmen twice in Liberty League action from Prentiss Field. Vassar took the opener 4-3, and followed that with a 6-2 win in game two.
In the first game, the Brewers (8-12, 2-5 Liberty League) got run-scoring hits from both Taylor Smach and Daniel Bonfiglio.  Starting pitcher Adam Erkis picked up the complete-game win, allowing three runs on eight hits.Â
Junior infielder
Andy Labeck led the Dutchmen's offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. First-year infielder
Sean Cullen and junior outfielder
Devin Coffey were each 2-for-2 with a run scored.
The Dutchmen (11-8, 7-3 Liberty League) opened the scoring in the top of the second when Cullen scored on
Wiley Knight's sacrifice fly. Smach provided the response for Vassar in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double to left-center field, making it 2-1.Â
Labeck put Union back in front 3-2 in the fifth inning, delivering a two-out, two-run single through the left side to score
Matt Catalfo and Coffey.
The Brewers fought back in the sixth inning, scoring two runs with a two out rally. Bonfiglio gave the Brewers the last lead they would need, ripping a single down the left field line to make it 4-3.
In the top of the seventh, Erkis got the Dutchmen 1-2-3 to pick up the complete game victory.
Jake Vesling suffered the loss for Union, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one over six innings.Â
In game two, the Brewers posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including three on one swing from Trausch. Bryan Rubin cruised through the final three innings to help Vassar secure the sweep.
Union struck first in the top of the first, scoring twice off of Vassar starter Jake Silver
on a RBI triple from Vesling and a RBI single from
Kent Curran.
The Brewers trimmed their deficit to one in the bottom half on the inning on a sacrifice fly from Trausch. The Dutchmen threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but reliever John Madsen came on and got a strikeout and a fly out to escape the jam.
An inning later, the Brewers piled on four runs to take a 5-2 lead, highlighted by a three-run double from Trauch, who launched a 1-1 pitch to left-center. Vassar added a run with a squeeze play in the sixth.Â
From that point, Rubin shut the door, allowing just two runners over his three innings secure the win.
Silver went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, and Rubin allowed one hit and one walk over three innings to move to 2-1 on the year.
Cullen produced his second multiple hit game of the day, going 2-for-3.
Ryan Kuchar took the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits over four innings.
These two teams will turn around and play again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Schenectady, NY, as Union hosts the Brewers for two more Liberty League games at Shuttleworth Park.
