Knights sweep Dutchwomen softball

SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Clarkson University softball team swept a Liberty League doubleheader from host Union College Saturday at Alexander Field. The Golden Knights won the opener, 6-1, and took the second contest, 8-4. Clarkson is now 15-11 on the season and 5-1 in Liberty League play, while the Dutchwomen stand 4-14 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Pitcher Jamie Bridge led the guests in the opener with a complete game three hitter to improve to 9-5. She allowed one earned run, did not walk a batter, and struck out 13. The senior had a perfect game entering the seventh, but it was broken up with a clean single to left center by Kara Brown. Nikki Ditizio drove in Union's only run in that inning with a two out single to score Brown. Brown pitched two innings of shutout relief and Carli Voellm made a tremendous running, diving catch in right center.

Raeanna Dunn, Danielle Whitham, Kyrstin Messier and Bridge had two hits each in the 10 hit Clarkson attack. Whitham drove in four runs, with 2 RBI singles in both the fourth and fifth innings. Bridge had two RBIs, one in the first and one in the three run fifth inning.

Summer Lancette was two for four with three RBIs for Clarkson, while Raeanna Dunn, Bridget Woolley and Kyrstin Messier had two hits each in the Game Two victory. Starter Maggie Stark improved to 2-0, giving up five hits and three earned runs with a walk and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Katie Pelton, who came on with the bases loaded in the seventh, got the final two batters for the save.

Brown and Laura Aptowitz had two hits each for Union, as did Kim Puzo, who hit her first homer of the season. It was a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Brown, Courtney Casey and Dana Dolinko each had an RBI in the three run fifth inning.

Union continues a five date, 10 game home stand Tuesday as the Dutchwomen will host Utica at 3:30 p.m. in a makeup from a twinbill rained out earlier in the season.
