CANTON, NY -- Kiera Taussig scored three goals and three other players added two each to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a key 11-9 Liberty League victory over Union College at North Country Field. The Saints improved to 4-3 in the league and 5-6 overall while the Dutchwomen fell to 3-4 in league play and 4-8 for the season.
Alexandra LaMotte, Olivia Slade and Emma Jewett scored twice each and Julia Mitiguy and Greta Massey scored once each for the Saints. The hosts had a 33-29 shot advantage and also had 25 shots on goal to Union's 15. St. Lawrence was nearly perfect on clears (13-14) and recorded 15 ground balls. Each team won 11 draw controls.
Cricket Wemyss made three saves in over 33 minutes of play while Olga Lukas, in over 26 minutes, also stopped three and earned the win.
Jen Hughes made 14 stops in the Union net.
Jackie Hagopian led the Dutchwomen with four goals and eight shots with three draw controls.
Kellie Cronin and
Hannah Rosenberger had two points each, as Rosenberger scored twice with six shots and Cronin had an assist with her goal.
Cailin Pandolfi and
Ramsey Walsh scored once each.
St. Lawrence had a 6-3 lead at halftime. Union tied it at 6-6 with a Rosenberger goal with 26:34 left, and Union had a two goal lead at 8-6 closing out a five goal run with 24:51 left on a free position score by Hagopian. But the Saints regained the lead at 20:38 at 9-8 and Hagopian pulled the guests to within two at 11-9 with 9:34 left but it was the final goal of the game.
Union wraps up regular season play at home next weekend with a 4 PM Friday game vs. RIT and a 2 PM game vs. Rochester on Saturday for Senior Day.
