Baseball splits with Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--The Union College baseball team held off a late charge by Skidmore to earn a 5-3 Liberty League win and secure a doubleheader split, Monday evening at Castle Diamond. The Thoroughbreds notched a 3-0 win in the opening game.

The Dutchmen move to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Skidmore goes to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference..

Thoroughbreds first-year pitcher Jay Gamboa threw a four-hit shutout in game one. After allowing three hits in the first inning, Gamboa worked out of trouble and allowed just one hit over the final six innings. He walked two and struck out two.
 
The Thoroughbreds scored one in the first on Josh Brown's RBI single.  Shawn Klier doubled to open the second and later scored on a Nick Fronte double. Fronte scored on an infield single by Daniel Dasgupta for the 3-0 final.
 
Andy Labeck led the Union offense, going 2-for-3 for Union. Ryan Kuchar had the complete game loss, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
 
Union rebounded in the second game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Kent Curran delivered a two-out RBI triple and Jake Vesling brought him home with a single to right field. Nate Olson extended the lead  with an RBI single in the second, plating Zack Twitchell with an RBI single and Twitchell scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 4-0. 

Dutchmen starting pitcher Jake Garber kept the Thoroughbreds off the board until the sixth when Pat Geiger belted a solo home run. Skidmore added two runs later in the inning to cut its deficit to 4-3, but Vesling added an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh. 

The Thoroughbreds threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but Bill Christopher shut the door for his first save of the season.
 
Spencer Anderson took the loss for Skidmore, allowing four runs over five and two-thirds innings.
 
Garber collected his first career win, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and no strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. 

Vesling finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Union. Curran was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored  and Twitchell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Union is scheduled to host Elms at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 4.
