AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—The Union College baseball team erupted for 18 hits in a 16-3 win against Southern Vermont, Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park. The Dutchmen improve to 6-6, while Southern Vermont goes to 4-12.
Junior infielder
Jake Vesling, sophomore infielder
Anthony Amoroso and first-year outfielder
Matt Catalfo were all 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the charge. Vesling had three RBI and a run scored, Amoroso added two RBI and three runs scored and Catalfo also had three runs scored.
Senior
Kent Curran (2-for-5), junior
Andy Labeck (2-for-3), and first-year
Colin Kelly (2-for-5) also contributed multiple hit games for the Dutchmen.
First-year pitcher
Colin Nye collected his first career win, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks over two and one-third innings.
Cody Sullivan put Southern Vermont on the board in the top of the fist with a two-out, two-run, bases-loaded single, but Union responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Labeck and Curran tied the game at 2-2 with back-to-back RBI singles and Vesling put the Dutchmen in front with an RBI groundout.
Zack Twitchell plated Curran with a sacrifice fly and
Wiley Knight made it 5-2 with an RBI single up the middle.
Amoroso added Union's sixth run of the game in the second with an RBI groundout. After a scoreless third the Dutchmen piled on a combined nine runs over fourth and fifth, including two-run doubles from Vesling and Kelly to open a 15-3 lead.
First-year
Donnie Weisse registered his first career RBI with groundout in the eighth for the 16-3 final.
Tyler Johnson took the loss for Southern Vermont, allowing six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work.
The Dutchmen return to Liberty League action this weekend, hosting Rochester in a four-game series.
