No. 14 William Smith Holds Off Women's Lacrosse

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The 14th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team scored eight goals in the first half  en route to a 12-7 Liberty League win against Union College, Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. The Duthchwomen go to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while the Herons, who extend their winning streak to seven games, move to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.

Senior Jackie Hagopian led Union with three points on two goals and an assist. Natalie Sullivan had a game-high four caused turnovers and tied for the team high with two ground balls, also contributing a goal and an assist. Hannah Rosenberger also had a multi-point game with a goal and a helper. In goal, Jen Hughes made five saves on 15 shots over 35:65, while Ellen Taney stopped two shots in 21:04 of relief.

Alexandra Bird had a game-high five goals and seven points for William Smith. Ali Burns added four goals and a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Allie Flaherty contributed a pair of goals. In goal, Sarah Honan made four saves  for her 10th win of the season.

The Herons jumped out to a 4-0 lead 8:25 into play after two free position goals by Bird and two tallies by Flaherty. Sullivan converted on a free-position attempt with 14:38 remaining in the half to put Union on the board, but William Smith responded with four unanswered goals, including Bird's second of the game just nine seconds later. Rosenberger potted the final goal of the half with 5:05 left in the frame, sending Union into the break trailing 8-2.

Mallory Toolan produced Union's third of the game 1:56 into the second half, scoring from in tight off a quick feed from Sullivan. The Herons extended their lead to 10-3, but the Dutchwomen scored four of the game's next five goals to cut its deficit to four at 11-7.

Hagopian netted two consecutive goals and assisted on Ramsey Walsh's sixth of the season with 9:42 to play to make it 11-6. Cailin Pandolfi scored on her own rebound with 3:50 left in regulation, but that's as close as it would get.

Burns added her fifth of the day with nine seconds remaining for the 12-7 final.

William Smith outshot Union 30-14 and held a 12-9 edge in draw controls and 16-10 edge in ground balls.

The Dutchwomen take on a pair of crosstown rivals next weekend, hosting Skidmore College on Friday (4:30 p.m.), and RPI on Saturday (3 p.m.).
