Dutchwomen open season with shutout over Pilgrims

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team posted a strong showing in its season debut, shutting out New England College, 1-0, at College Park Field on Friday evening.

Sophomore Linsey Giles (Bedford, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Dutchwomen in the ninth minute. Nicole Sturno (Wyckoff, N.J.) gathered the ball at the top of the box before crossing it to the far side. Giles collected the pass and finished the play by putting her shot past the New England College goalkeeper for her fourth career goal.

Despite only scoring one goal, the Dutchwomen controlled the majority of the game against the Pilgrims. Union had 13 shots on goal to just five by New England College.

Union's backline shined in the second half, turning away any scoring chances the Pilgrims mustered in the waning minutes. Union goalkeeper Kelsey Hartsoe (Wallingford, Conn.) made a total of five saves in the contest for her seventh career shutout.

The Dutchwomen return to College Park Field tomorrow for an afternoon matinee against Bridgewater State at 1 p.m. (ET).
