SCHENECTADY, NY - With just under 18 minutes to go in regulation, First year
Chris Muther scored his first career goal for the Dutchmen to give the team the advantage over SUNY Cobleskill.
Despite the incredibly physical match up between the Dutch and the Tigers, the opening half was a sheer chess match. Within the first 25 minutes, there were only two shots on net between the two teams. The teams also combined for 35 fouls on the evening.
Cobleskill came out aggressive in the second half and lead the way for the first 15 minutes. Finally, 60 minutes into play, Union took back the momentum. With just three shots on goal at the 60 minute mark, Union doubled their shot totals in just four minutes.
The Tigers threatened to take the lead with 23 minutes to go in regulation when a Cobleskill free kick nearly found its way into the net. Senior keeper
John Weitzman came up clutch with an incredible diving save off his lower right hand side of the net to keep the scoreboard blank.
Finally, at the 72 minute mark, Muther gathered a loose ball that he knocked in off the cross bar into the upper right hand corner to solidify the victory for the Dutch.
The Union College men's soccer team returns to action this weekend against St. Lawrence, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m.
