Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Smith goal wins it at William Paterson, 3-2

WAYNE, NJ -- Sophomore Jenna Smith scored off a corner as time expired to give the Union College field hockey team a 3-2 non-league victory at William Paterson University Wednesday night at Wightman Stadium. Union is 3-3 and the Pioneers are 2-7.

The clock hit 0:00 before freshman Laura Wind sent the insert to Charlotte Leyland on the right wing. Leyland dribbled in and hit a through ball toward the left post that Smith was able to poke in on the goal line for the game winner.

The Pioneers twice owned a one-goal lead, the first one coming 100 seconds into the contest when senior forward Carly Satter launched a hard blast from just inside the circle to the right post. Leyland answered with 2:02 remaining in the first half, taking a Sarah Wilkinson penalty-corner insert, dribbling up the middle of the field and converting to the left side of the cage.

WP again struck almost immediately after the opening whistle, this time finding the back of the cage 31 seconds into the second half when Shannon Super played a ball from wide on the right side and Andrea Mauro got her stick on it to redirect it to inches beneath the crossbar. Wilkinson leveled the score for the Dutchwomen in the 55th minute when she streaked hard up the left seam and connected with a Bretta Beer cross.

WP junior Mallory Rickerhauser posted five saves for the Pioneers. Freshman Mary Beth Rudolf stopped three shots during the first 46:55, and classmate Heather Poisson collected one save and the victory.

Union is back in action Saturday to host Liberty League rival Skidmore at 2 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
