MAHWAH, N.J. – At the first day of the Roadrunner Invitational, the Union College volleyball team defeated Lebanon Valley College, 3-1. The Dutchwomen improved their season record to 8-10.
In the opening set, the teams traded off points until it was 12-12. The Dutch went on a mini 3-0 run to go up 15-12. LVC eventually tied it back up at 18-18 and would ultimately take set one at 25-22.
In the second set, LVC jumped out to a 10-6 lead, and later extended it 14-8. The Dutch would prove to be relentless, however, and began to creep back into the set. They would later pull within one of LVC at 18-17. LVC responded with a 6-0 run, capped off with a kill, to go ahead 24-17. LVC, however, was unable to close out the set and Union scored the set's final nine points to take the set 26-24 and even the match at 1-1.
It was another back-and-forth game that followed and LVC held an 11-9 edge before scoring three straight to increase the lead to 14-9. But, the Dutchwomen again went on a run, scoring four consecutive points to come to within a point at 14-13. After LVC scored two in a row, Union tied things up at 16-16. Later, with the set knotted at 23-23, a kill would make it 24-23, LVC, but three consecutive points for Union allowed them to clinch the third set at 26-24.
Union jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the fourth, but LVC crawled their way back and came to within four at 14-10. The Dutchwomen followed by scoring five of the next eight to go ahead by six at 19-13, but LVC would eventually pull within three at 19-16. However, they were unable to mount a comeback and Union took home the match victory with the fourth set win at 25-22.
