PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Backstopped by a 20-save shutout from
Darion Hanson, the Union College men's hockey team earned its first shutout victory since Dec. 5, 2015 with a 2-0 win over Brown on Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Â
The win improves Union to 14-12-1 on the season with a 10-4-0 mark in ECAC Hockey play, as the Dutchmen sit in third place. Brown drops to 6-11-3 on the year with a 5-9-0 record in ECAC Hockey.

Senior
Ryan Scarfo scored both goals in the contest, finishing off a four-point weekend. Both goals were scored in similar fashion while on the power play.
Â
Scarfo opened the scoring during Union's first power play of the game in the early part of the second period. Moving the puck around the zone,
J.C. Brassard took a shot that was stopped by Luke Kania, but Scarfo picked up the rebound and buried his chance to break the stalemate.
Â
Union carried the 1-0 lead into the second intermission while out shooting Brown 17-11 through 40 minutes.
Â
Midway through the third period, Union earned a five-minute major power play after Brown's Alex Brink was ejected for checking from behind.
Â
During the ensuing power play, Scarfo picked up another rebound from a Brassard shot and put it past Kania for his second and final goal of the game.
Â
Brown pressured in the final minutes, but Union's defense and Hanson weathered the late push for the weekend sweep. In addition to the strong goaltending, Hanson was helped out in front as the Dutchmen blocked a total of 16 shots.
Â
Union will return to the ice next weekend for the Sixth-annual Capital District Mayor's Cup, taking on RPI at 6 p.m. (ET) at the Times Union Center in Albany.
