SCHENECTADY, NY - After a hard-fought battle between the Union College women's basketball team and the RPI Engineers, the Dutchwomen ultimately dropped the contest 37-47.
Union got off to a slow start, but thanks to a fourth quarter surge the Dutchwomen pressured the Engineers to as close as a six-point game.
With one-minute to go in the first quarter, Union trailed RPI eight to 14. Senior Jenni Barra drained a basket from behind-the-arc to bring the Dutch within three of the Engineers, to end the first 10 minutes of play.
In the following two quarters, RPI pulled away from the Dutchwomen with a respectable lead. After out-shooting the Dutch 18 to seven over the two quarters, RPI led Union 41-18 with just 10 minutes left to play.
At the 9:07 mark, Lily Abarbanel drove through the paint to bank in a layup. With the ball in RPI's hands, Abarbanel stole the ball from the Engineers and assisted a Nicole Conley jumper. Conley also drained a layup to complete Union's 6-0 run in just 1:03.Â
With five minutes left in the game, Union trailed the Engineers just 28-34. However, solid free throw shooting, helped lift RPI 47-37 over the Dutchwomen.
Union returns to action for a home double-header weekend next week to take on Skidmore and Ithaca College in the Viniar Center on Friday and Saturday, respectively.Â
