SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team made quick work of The Sage Colleges in a non-conference match on Tuesday evening, winning by a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-22) score at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Sophomore
Lara Atalay led a balanced Union (15-9) attack with 16 kills and 15 digs for the match's only double-double. Classmate
Katie Moss put down 10 kills on .500 hitting and fellow sophomore
Julia Louis added eight kills of her own. Freshman
Olivia Salvador chipped in 10 digs and junior
Maegan Teets recorded 12 assists as well.
The Dutchwomen were dominant in the first set, hitting .407 with 13 kills on 27 attempts. Senior
Alaina Thaxter started the match with a kill and Union jumped out to a 15-2 lead, helped by eight straight points on the serve of senior
Caroline Everts that included a pair of aces.
The second stanza was the only one to feature any lead changes, with five ties mixed in as well. Sage led to start the frame before a 6-2 run put Union ahead. The set was tied at 15 before senior
Emma Sprotbery put down a kill and then earned the next six points on her serve to secure the Union lead.
The home team held a comfortable 15-5 lead in the third set after six straight points on Moss' serve, but Sage responded with a 10-1 run to get back within a point at 16-15. However, an Atalay kill and ace sandwiched around a Thaxter and Sprotbery block got Union back on track and on the way to the sweep.
Union will play its final home match of the 2018 season on Friday night, when the team recognizes its three graduating seniors with Senior Night against Morrisville State College beginning at 6 p.m. at Viniar Athletic Center.
