Leyland Nets Three, Union Cruises Past Brockport

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Charlotte Leyland recorded her second career hat trick to lead the Union College field hockey team to a 5-0 blanking of SUNY Brockport in a non-conference matchup at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium on Wednesday night.

Leyland was one of three goal scorers on the night for Union (7-9), which outshot Brockport by a 23-6 margin. In addition to Leyland's three, senior Hannah Christian and sophomore Katie Talacci scored as well for the home team.

Union did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, striking first in the second minute of action. A bevy of pressure resulted in Christian corralling her own rebound and beating Brockport keeper Adriana DeDie for her second goal of the year. Leyland netted her first of the night in the 11th minute, when she took a pass from near midfield and raced past the Brockport midfield before cutting into the middle of the arc and finding the net. Union held a 13-5 edge on shots at the half.

Three more balls found the back on the net in the second half. Leyland added her second and third of the night at the 48:25 and 54:47 mark, respectively, when she received feeds from senior Allison Cosentino and sophomore Laura Wind before converting them into scores. Talacci added her seventh goal of the year in the final minute, taking a feed from classmate Abby Torgerson and scoring from close range.

Sophomore Mary Beth Rudolf was the beneficiary of the offensive attack, making four saves in 54:47 of action to earn the win. Freshmen Gabriella Stein and Jenna Paszek both made their collegiate debuts in goal as well for Union on the night.

Union will finish out the 2018 season on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen host SUNY Oswego for Senior Day beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field.
