SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College sophomore forward
Sierra Lee scored the game-winning goal with 1:59 remaining in the third period and junior
Amelia Murray earned her first collegiate victory as the Dutchwomen topped
Lindenwood University, 3-2, in non-conference women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon from
Messa Rink.
Lindenwood got on the board first just 21 seconds into the game, but Union held the Lions off the scoreboard for the next 50 minutes. The home team held an 8-7 edge in shots after 20 minutes.
Â
Senior
Arianna Kosakowski evened the score at 8:13 of the second period with an unassisted tally, crashing the net to put home her own rebound. Junior
Haley Shugart put the Dutchwomen in front on the power play at 8:02 of the third, with assists to Kosakowski and junior
Rachel de Perio.
Â
Lindenwood returned the favor less than three minutes later on the man advantage, but Lee put Union ahead for good with less than two minutes left in the third when she beat goalie Sophie Wolf for a loose puck in front and slid it under the pads and in.
Â
Sophomores
Angelica Melone and
Makayla Mori picked up the assists, with Melone earning her first collegiate point after taking the initial shot that Lee cleaned up.
Â
Murray made the lead stand up with 14 third-period saves, giving her 31 stops on 33 shots for the afternoon. Union was outshot 33-22 on the day, but Murray did her part to pick up the first win of her collegiate career.
Â
Union is back home next weekend for a two-game series with Penn State University, beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at Messa Rink.
