Leyland Leads Field Hockey Past Elms, 6-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Charlotte Leyland led all players with five points as the Union College field hockey team snapped its losing streak emphatically with a 6-0 win over Elms College in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Frank Bailey Field.

Leyland had a big game for Union (4-7), scoring twice and adding an assist for five points, her fifth game of three or more points this season. Sophomore Abby Torgerson came off the bench to score twice, while sophomores Katie Talacci and Laura Wind scored as well for the home team.

Wind got the scoring started in the beginning of the seventh minute, when Talacci fed a pass across the goalmouth for her classmate to swing into a vacant net. The next goal did not come until the 33rd minute, when senior Hannah Christian dished a penalty corner off to Leyland for a rip from the top of the arc.

Union was dominant in the opening 35 minutes, outshooting Elms by a 16-0 margin and forcing six saves from Jillian Lapponese as well as a defensive save.

The Dutchwomen continued the offensive attack in the second half, posting a 13-2 edge in shots and scoring four more times in the first 16 minutes. Talacci put home a nice cross from Leyland at the back post for her sixth goal of the season at the 39:18 mark, followed seven minutes later by Torgerson's first of the night off a Christian assist. Leyland and Torgerson added their second goals of the evening less than two minutes apart later in the frame, with junior Sarah Wilkinson earning an assist on Leyland's score.

Union finished the game with a 29-2 edge in shots. Sophomore Heather Poisson did not need to make a save in order to pick up her first shutout of the season at the other end of the field.

The Dutchwomen will return to action on Friday, as they kick off Homecoming and Family Weekend with a 4 p.m. game against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
